Desperation In Green

Published by under Blog,Greystones

In recent weeks, the DART has been getting quieter and quieter. It’s strange. This time last year the train filled rapidly at Greystones and people were forced to stand by the time we were leaving Bray Station. Whereas today, and especially yesterday, this 8.30am DART is less than 50% capacity as we depart Greystones and Bray has to added much to the mix.

Ok, some of it can be put down to the kids studying for exams and such, some of it can be put down to people taking their summer holidays, but a drop as dramatic as this is very scary – are job losses really gone this bad?

A taxi driver told Lottie last week that he can see a definite decline in traffic over the past 6 months. Even Rick has photographic evidence of the drop in train travelling numbers.

ESRI says it’s going to get a lot worse before it improves, with unemployment hitting over 16% next year. Can it get much worse?

Bless You

Published by under Blog

St Andrew's Church, Westland RowAs I wandered past St. Andrew’s Church on Westland Row this morning, a guy walking in the opposite direction blessed himself as he strolled by the entrance. It’s something I haven’t seen in some time.

When I was younger my Granny always blessed herself whenever she passed a church, graveyard or anything remotely religious. My dad still does some bastardised version of a blessing as he drives by the graveyard down home (it looks more like he’s swatting a fly from his chin). I have seen the elderly do this on occasion but it’s a rarity these days.

I’m not religious at all, but even as a child I thought this an odd thing. I remember being in the back seat of the car and being told to bless myself. I could never grasp the whys of it.

So, do people still do this, do people still practise this ritual?

May Day

Published by under Blog,Story

Greystones DART StationOn a crowded rush hour DART an elderly man sits opposite me, head hung, nursing an old photograph.

I stare into space, as I am wont to do. The bearded guy beside me is buried in The Watchmen graphic novel. There is a young blond woman beside the old man reading Elle.

The old man sighs loudly and there is a distinct stench of last night’s Jameson coming from him. He wants attention.

I stare on. Beardy guy turns the page of his comic. Blondie lifts her hand to cover her nose, but her head stays in her glossy rag.

“I met her sixty years ago today”, he begins.

Beardy doesn’t seem to notice. I smirk slightly at Blondie’s obvious discomfort. She glances away from him, perhaps seeking another seat. There are none to spare.

“She did the washup and looked after the babbies in one of the English houses and I was working with their man in the house.

“We had eight children. Nine actually. And we fought like eejits on that first day.”

I am not sure where to look. It’s clear he is going to keep talking. I’m not sure if he’s addressing one of the other two, but I sure as hell am not about to make eye contact.

“Every few years we would talk about that May Day. I always forgot what we fought over, but she never forgot. She had a divil of a memory,” he says with a slight chirp in his tone. Without looking at him, I can hear the smile in his voice.

“I think she changed the story a bit over the years.

“I was doing some work in the yard and went into the little downstairs kitchen to get a cup. I’d swear I never saw the dog. I wouldn’t have let a muddy dog into the house.

“But out she comes after me. Effin’ and blindin’. She looked like a lady but she had a mouth like a sailor. She was hitting me, telling me I had let the dog loose in the house and he was after jumping up on one of the babbies’ baptism dresses. Big expensive white yoke.”

He’s not looking at any of us. We are all looking at him, with alternating glances at each other exchanging silent “should we say somethings” and “is he for reals“.

“She wouldn’t even let me speak. I was guarding myself from her slaps while laughing me head off – go away, you mad woman, I says.

“Sixty years ago.

“That’s her there”, he says nudging Blondie and showing her the old photo.

She smiles a genuine smile and looks intently at the picture. She presents it to Beardy and me too.

I’d say it was taken in the early eighties. There’s an old woman standing beside a brown car. Her frumpy, flowery dress was probably fashionable about ten years previous, but she carried it well. Quite glamourous, I would say. In fact I do say it.

“Oh, she always dressed well. We never had nothing but she made sure none of us left the house with a rip in our clothes or a hole in our shoes.”

Blondie took the picture back and in her big D4 accent she asked, “So, like, what happened then?”

“Ah, yer man I was working with let the animal in. She never once apologised, but I said she could make up for it by coming with me to the dance that night. We were together from that day on.

“And you know, she had a boyfriend at the time and I was seeing this young one too. There was war.”

Beardy finally pipes up – “That’s lovely, man”.

Then we pull into Killiney and he moves to get up. Blondie stands respectfully. I tell him that it was absolute pleasure to meet him and Beardy agrees.

The three of us chat about our wonderful shared moment as far as Bray where Blondie and Beardy both get off.

I should have spent more time talking to my Granny about her life while she was still around.

Tag, You’re It

Published by under Blog

Darren's Sore FootFine, Andrew (and Anthony and others) tagged me in a meme. I won’t pretend to hate these things – I often learn interesting things about people through these. This one, however, may provide some less than interesting results.

The gist of it is:

  • Put the link of the person who tagged you on your blog.
  • Write the rules.
  • Mention 6 things or habits of no real importance about you.
  • Tag 6 persons adding their links directly.
  • Alert the persons that you tagged them.

So, here be mine:

  1. I drink about 8 cups of tea most days. I love tea more than alcohol.
  2. I used to imagine the woods beside my house was haunted and I would go there to talk to the ghosts.
  3. My foot is sore.
  4. I believe that time travel will one day be possible.
  5. I rarely find blonds attractive. On a subconscious level, I think they are stupid, even though I know it’s irrational.
  6. I stare at people too much. I can’t help it. I am transfixed by people and end up trying to work out what’s going on in their heads, what they work at, who they live with, what their parents are like…I am caught staring a lot.

I think I’ll let this thread of the meme die with me, unless anyone wants to take up the mantle?

I Am A Knobhead

Published by under Blog,Night Out

DarrenI am a knobhead. Yep, I admit it. I am stupid on a level so high they call it the stupidly high level for stupid people.

While out on Saturday, rather than wait for people to move or ask them politely to ‘excuse me’, I thought the better course of action would be to walk across the table. I was ever so slightly wrong.

Down I came to a crashing halt, sending DailyDaydreamer halfway across the floor and sending my ankle in a direction it most definitely didn’t wish to go.

In all sorts of pain and with the help of Lottie, I hobbled outside. I am not sure why I went outside – as far as I’m aware fresh Dublin air isn’t known for spontaneously healing sprained ankles.

And so, I continued with my evening, limping around like a fool, occasionally pausing to check my swollen ankle and my bruised ego. I survived the night, but could not walk at all on Sunday.

Today, I can walk. I am still in a lot of pain and my foot is still twice the size it should be, but it is getting better.

So, there you have it. I am a knobhead. And I’m back. 🙂

Politics Is Not For Me

Published by under Blog

Politics of any kind – I just don’t get it. The backstabbing, the misrepresentations, the spin, the between-the-lines commentaries, the lies – I don’t understand why anyone would want to surround themselves in that poisonous world.

Perhaps some of it is well intentioned, but it’s tough to see it.

Going Analogue

Published by under Blog

My laptop’s touchpad seems to have developed a mind of its own today. So, before I wander down to the stationery shop to pick up a little USB mouse, I’m going analogue to put my thoughts down on paper.

Today, I’m thinking about the amazing weekend at the Irish Blog Awards in cork and all the wonderful people I met; I’m thinking about my blog’s future; I’m thinking about culch.ie. I’m wondering about things like trust and friendship and the importance of honesty. I’m ruminating on sex and relationships and the power of attraction (don’t worry Lottie, it’s the power of attraction towards you that I’m thinking about). I’m also considering getting dressed and going for a wander. I’m trying to put together a plan for my day…then my week…then my year and my life.

So, not too much on my mind today at all.

Fat Thursday

Published by under Blog

Fat Thursday is a traditional Polish and German feast marking the last Thursday before Lent. We celebrate it in our office by indulging in doughnuts. Last year, we had a variety of shop bought and dodgy McDonalds’ doughnuts.

This year, it’s Marks and Spencers all the way.

Delorentos Calling It A Day?

Published by under Blog,Music

DelorentosI saw Delorentos in Greystones Theatre last year. Strictly speaking, I went to see Director, but Delorentos were playing support and trying out some new songs. The songs were among their best. They were far more impressive than Director on the night and they left me desperate to hear more from them.

Today, on Twitter, Ray Foley said that Delorentos were no more. Rapture Ponies emailed me some more details in the form of a statement from the band:

We’ve got some sad news.

It’s with a very heavy heart that we have to let you know that Ronan has decided to leave the band. He feels it’s best for him to move on and do other things. The three of us will still be making music and will let you know what happens next.

As our songs always came from the four of us playing together we’ve also decided that it wouldn’t feel right to continue “delorentos” without him.

We’re all very proud of the songs we’ve written over the last year, we feel they’re some of the best we’ve ever done, and as a result we’re determined not to discard them or let them go.

Next month, the four of us are going to record this album together and plan on making it something we’ll all be proud of. It’ll be our last collection of songs as delorentos, and we hope you’ll like them.

We want to thank everyone that’s supported us since we started, we’d never have gotten this far without you. We hope to play a gig or two to say goodbye.

We’ll be in touch soon with more details.

Ross, Níal and Kieran and Ro

I really look forward to the new album, but I’ll be sad to see the group disband.

My Pride And Joy

Published by under Blog

LottieMy much better half, Lottie, has made it to the short list for Best Newcomer at the Irish Blog Awards for her site, The National Lottie. I couldn’t be more proud.

I am so lucky that when I first buried my head in the blogging world a year ago, she did not slag me off for being a nerd (okay, she did a bit) and she did not give out that I was spending too much time online. Instead, she held my hand and jumped in head first with me. In this past year, I have learned so much more about her, things I may never have discovered had she not had this wonderful creative outlet. Her words and thoughts have been inspiring and funny and I’ve loved reading it all.

Congratulations to Lottie and fingers crossed you’ll bring home the Best Newcomer Bloggie.
