Zimbabwe

Published by at 2:26 pm under Blog,Politics

Andrew has written an excellent piece on the situation is Zimbabwe. I urge you to pop over and read it. It’s a shocking piece which focuses on the human element and the effect of Mugabe’s regime on the individuals in the country.

You would have to made of stone not to be deeply upset by this image. This is Blessing Mabhena, an 11 month old boy, whose legs were deliberately broken by Robert Mugabe’s thugs in order to punish his father for being an opposition councillor in Zimbabwe. You can read the full story here. I found myself just staring blankly at the computer screen for about ten minutes after reading this story, unsure of what to do next.

He also points to Bryan Mukandi’s new blog on IrishTimes.com, which is also worth checking out for his post on Zimbabwe.

Cheers for the link Daz, hope you’re on the mend you sickly little orphan boy.

And Fianna Fail, really? It’s been Sinn Fein all the way for me ever since that fabulous Mary Lou McDonald raised her lovely head. That’s why I voted for her to be Queen of Ireland in that referendum we had recently.

@Andy No probs, Sir. Anything to highlight an excellent piece. And Queen of Ireland? I was well wide of the mark!

The situation in Zimbabwe is truly appalling, and what happened to Blessing Mabhena is just a typically sickening example. Mugabe and his henchmen will stop at nothing to keep control of the country and the pathetic tutt-tutting by other countries has as much effect as a peashooter. The only solutions to Mugabe’s reign of terror are invasion or assassination. Time will tell which one it is.

@Nick Thank you for your comment. TO be honest, I don’t know enough about the whole thing (I will do the research), but from what I do know, I think assassination may be the only route. Invasion may lead to whole bunch of new problems. I don’t know enough to comment really.

The childs mother fabricated the story for an international press and audience prepared to believe anything that confirms their own prejudices. The Sunday Times online is still carrying the story without a retraction. The end comment from Darren should be adopted by everyone here who know they know nothing yet continue to comment anyway. The child Blessing was born with a congenital condition; clubbed feet and his mother being entrepreneurial either decided to exploit the gullibilities of Christine Lamb, the Times reporter who broke the story or else she was paid to do so. This is just the tip of the iceberg with respect to the standard of international media commentary emerging from Zimbabwe. Mugabe has been demonised since the land reclamations and it would be thought that Irish people in particular would have developed an extra sensitivity for this type of misrepresentation.
